Our Immigration Areas of Focus
Asylum and Refugee Issues
People across the world enter the United States to escape unstable or dangerous situations in their home countries. At Cascadia Cross Border Law Group LLC, we help these individuals pursue safety and security in the United States by helping them obtain asylum here.
Asylum is a means for people who face persecution in other countries to remain in the United States. An application for asylum must meet several specific requirements, and an inaccurate or incomplete application can prevent an applicant from receiving the relief he or she needs.
Requirements For Asylum In The United States
To obtain asylum, you must show that you have a “well-founded fear of persecution” or have suffered persecution in the past. This persecution must be based on one or more of the following grounds:
- Membership in a particular social group
- Political opinion
You must file for asylum within one year of entering the United States, with a few exceptions. Asylum is ultimately at the discretion of the asylum officer or immigration judge. Our attorneys are adept at gathering evidence, preparing testimony and making persuasive cases for people seeking asylum.
If your application is approved, you will receive a grant of asylum and then, after one year in asylee status, the right to apply for a green card. If your application is denied, you will face removal. Even if your application for asylum is denied, you may still have other potential remedies, including withholding of removal, so it is critical to speak with us before giving up hope.
